Fred Again

He's off-model and messy as hell, but damn I had fun drawing him. I think I'm getting the hang of constructing my work and keeping loose at the same time.

Say, this whole 'studying the classics' thing is paying off!

Fred Head

Drawn in about 20 seconds with a pen. I'm kind of proud.

Fred Pokes Barney in the Nose

Today I discovered that I love to draw the Flinstones!

I've often thought of Hanna Barbera as being kind of crappy (Scooby Doo, I'm looking at you), but I've been looking at the first season of this show and there's some very funny stuff in there.

Here's a few copies from the show - I've drawn a few Freds of my own that I'll upload soon.

The Old Grey Hare

Elmer Fudd is a generic design, but I find him difficult to draw right - its hard to anchor his features to his head. So I've been copying frames from the opening shot of 'The Old Grey Hare'.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs

'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' is awesome!

CG animated films are a dime a dozen these days, and aside from the Pixar films, I rarely bother to even catch them on DVD. But the trailer for this movie got a chuckle out of me, and today my friends and I decided to check it out. What I saw was one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a cinema.

The fact that the film has a monkey, evil gummi bears, and a character voiced by Mr T, all contribute to this, but there's something else: this actually feels like a cartoon.

This film isn't afraid to be very silly indeed - in fact it revels in it, and dares to do things that you can't do in live-action. For me this is the whole darn point of the medium, yet for some reason no-one does it anymore.

Heck, there were even a few moments were the animation ITSELF made me laugh - I can't remember the last time that happened at the movies. Does this mean that one day cartoons can be fun again?

Of course it's still got nothing on the Looney Tunes, but I'm excited to have seen a movie that even reminds me of them, when every other film these days is a 'Shrek' sequel.

I'll be seeing this one again... in 3D!

Slap Happy Lion

It's a real balancing act of making the copy as accurate as I can, yet still keeping the energy of the original. One day maybe I'll be able to do both?

(To John K: if you have any advice on this, that would be great! Thanks)
